“When studying the experts in the field of building community, a common theme is how community problems (and their solutions) do not relate to one another in a linear sequence, but rather in something like a network, in which correcting (or addressing) one requires correcting several. Years ago, the many volunteers of the Rose City Bluff Restoration effort didn’t merely set out to clear blackberries and other invasive plant species, or to only restore native plants to our neighborhood, but rather, they embarked on the long-term goal to build community. Moreso, they built and continue to build a deep, intentional, connected, sustainable community centered around nature, wildlife, and neighborhoods (and their members) surrounding the Rose City Bluff. Their continuous efforts wonderfully encompass what Wendell Berry envisioned when he so simply, yet powerfully wrote, ‘The land and people can recover their health by the same work at the same time.’ ” (Tommy Jarvis, 2024. Many thanks to the Jarvis family for hosting the Bird’s Eye Cafe on the Bluff.)
